A Peek Inside a Lesson...
Many of the games, quizzes and activities we use are ones I've created over the years, so there's a good chance your child will be trying something they've never seen before!
🌟 Step 1: Spinning the 'Big Wheel of Writing Games'
We'll kick off the lesson with a surprise game or puzzle to get those brains fired up. A particular favourite is Psychic Picasso, where you describe something so clearly that your partner can draw what's in your head!
🌟 Step 2: The 'Inspiration Station'
Whether we're feeling ravenous reading Michael Rosen's Chocolate Cake poem or discovering the goings-on of a star-nosed mole, the 'Inspiration Station' is where our first writing ideas are hatched.
🌟 Step 3: It's the 'Cheesecake Challenge'
And because you can never have enough cake*, we're ready for the main writing challenge! Your child will brainstorm ideas, develop characters, and sketch out storylines - setting up their next brilliant story...
*The writing challenge is always written on a picture of a delicious cheesecake, for reasons that remain lost to the ether!
Now comes the most exciting part - turning their ideas into a story, a poem, or maybe even a Star Wars stop-motion film! I'll be there to help them bring their ideas to life, and if they get stuck, they can always dip into their 'Ideas Bank' - their own little box of story ideas and favourite words, too.
🌟 Step 5: Picking a 'Power-Up' card
When they've finished their first draft, they'll get to choose a 'Power-Up' card to give their writing an extra boost. They could go for something like Sensational Senses to add sounds and smells, the Simile Sprinkler to top up their imagery, or The Verb is the Word to make their description really sizzle! Who said editing couldn't be fun?
🌟 Step 6: 'Blow Your Own Trumpet' time
We'll then wrap up the lesson with an opportunity to celebrate their progress, set new goals, and for them to proudly share their new writing with you!
